Our first road trip......coming up! Need suggestions!

Awwwwwwwwww. It's Aiden's 1st Easter!

Soooooooooo, we are getting ready to take our first roadtrip since Aiden was born. Yikes!  This is frightening to me for a number of reasons. First of all, traveling with 4 kids just seems scary to me!  We have our 6 year old, Emma who gets terribly car sick. Our 4 year old, Joshua has to go potty every half hour and our 8 year old Andrew gets totally bored and asks if we are there yet a million and five times.  I can actually handle all of those things though, I'm used to that. What I'm not used to is traveling with a colicky baby who hates the car!  Countless times we have had to stop so I could get him out of his carseat and nurse him or whatever to get him to calm down. So traveling to my in-laws for Easter is sounding very scary to me!

Another thing is, our baby swing has been our lifeline. I did a review of it when I first started blogging again after Aiden was born last month and I really liked it. Although I have found things about it now that I don't necessarily love, it has gotten us through the past 6 weeks. Sometimes it's the only thing that will calm him down. So what I need to know is, is there a good, compact swing that you would recommend?! We don't have a travel swing and I am very afraid it is going to be a dreadful weekend trip at my in-law's without a swing so I think I should start seriously considering getting one to travel with us. What do you all think?! And do any of you have any suggestions about car sickness?! We have tried the Sea Bands with our daughter, otherwise we have to drug her up on Bonine to survive. Ugh! And what are some things you all do w/ your kids to occupy them on roadtrips in the car?! I NEED ALL YOUR ADVICE!!

Much Love,

Sarah

  1. We LOVED our travel swing! We have the small travel version of the fisher price rainforest open top swing. Oreo loved it!

Also for your colicky baby we had the same exact problems and were pulling over CONstantly to nurse/soothe until we tried Colic Calm. It can only be ordered online though, but they are super fast with shipping and trust me the price is SO worth it.

As for car sickness, we haven't had to deal with this yet! Oreo is just 17 months and Im hopeing he doesn't develop car sickness ever!
Check out this link that has a bunch of really good tips about prevention of car sickness!

  3. Good luck!
I agree that the Fisher Price Take Along Swing is great! We had one with our last, but the older boys broke it and now I have to get a new one :(

I get a little car sick on long trips, but it's not all of the time and it's not so bad as long as I don't try to read in the car.

My boys love to play handheld games like the ds and other little games. They sometimes color and eat snacks too. (I would limit drinks if you could though since you have one that has to use the restroom a lot.) Oh, and movies in the dvd. I highly recommend a dvd player if you don't have one!

I hope you have a fun and safe trip!

  6. Wish I knew something to say about the carsickness and colic, but fortunately all 5 of mine are really good car kids. Long trips really don't face them to much, except Savanna who gets bored super easy. I keep coloring books and crayons, puzzle boards (with strings hot glued to the board and pieces to keep from losing them), books, and little favorites handy to keep them occupied. Definitely plan to take longer than normal to get somewhere. You never know what might happen. As for travel swings, we had one of the rain forest looking ones and the twins loved it! Hope you have a great and uneventful drive! Following from MBC
