Your Family and Dental Health PLUS $25 Visa Card Giveaway!!!

Dental health has recently became a HUGE topic in our house. We have always made our children brush their teeth at least twice a day because I don't want them to have to go through painful dental procedures because of cavities that could have been prevented by simply brushing and flossing their teeth properly!  We take it so seriously that it is included on our kids daily chore chart and we PAY them to brush twice a day!  I know that is pretty extreme but I really want them to have good oral health because there are so many benefits to having healthy teeth!  And besides, the $.50 a day we are paying them to brush is much cheaper than the cost it would take to pay for fillings and all the other expenses that come along with dental work!

After taking our 9 year old son to a routine dental visit a few weeks ago, it was found that he has some extra permanent teeth! How crazy is that?! So now we have to make a visit to the Orthodontist soon so he can evaluate and decide which teeth stay, which teeth go and eventually he will have to have braces to get things straightened back out. I hate that he has to go through all of that but we know it is going to benefit him in the long run and it is for the best!  He doesn't see it now but he will thank us when he is older!!!

My husband and I try to be a good example and we always brush and floss our teeth. We recently got to try the Arm & Hammer Advance White Toothpaste and we were super excited about it! We have decided to buy it all of the time now because it leaves our teeth feeling so good and clean and because it's a fraction of the price that we have paid for others that did not yield good results. Our 15 month olds favorite activity right now is brushing his teeth too, although, I have to admit....if I let him do it himself, he just sucks on the toothbrush. BUT, he is learning!!! I just want my children to learn the benefits of having healthy teeth and gums. Not only does it make them have a pretty smile and fresher breath which results in increased confidence but researchers are now saying it is beneficial to overall health!! Experts are actually saying that poor oral hygiene is linked to an increased risk of systemic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes!!!

What is something you do to promote good oral health in your family!

Leave a comment here with your name and email address and answer that question and you could win a $25 Prepaid Visa Card!

Giveaway will end on June 14, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.
Winner will be chosen at random via random.org

  1. I have our 15 month old brush with us... She doesn't really get it yet, but whenever we brush our teeth, she's in there, sitting on the counter, holding her toothbrush, and we show her what to do... :) She loves it!

  2. I make sure my sons floss once a day and brush at least twice a day. One big incentive is that they don't want to get cavities and have to go to the dentist (they don't like going to the dentist).

  3. We drink water at home and almost never have soda! After drinking water for so long we have really gotten used to it and it's actually weird for us to drink soda or tea, which is great for our teeth!

  4. I'm also a stickler for seeing that my daughter brushes twice a day. She wears palatal expanders, making it even more important. We brush the expanders as well as the teeth!

  9. I made up a 'brush our teeth' song when my daughter was very young. We also let her take the toothbrush with her when the brushing is over and she walks around with it for a while (mostly chewing on it, but she cried when we took it away, and I don't want her to associate it with anxiety or bad feelings.) She's never had a problem with me brushing her teeth.

  12. We brush our teeth before we leave the house. The kids know that we aren't going anywhere until it is done. They get it over with and know we can leave soon.

  19. We brush our teeth three times a day together and we brush if we eat something that is more likely to stain our teeth. I brush my toddler's teeth and then let her brush. She is getting the hang of it. I tell her good job and reward her with princess stickers.

  23. We don't keep a lot of sugary snacks or drinks in our home. This was difficult at first for my foster son, as his previous caregivers would put soda in baby bottles and feed him packaged junk food. He was what I would call a sugar addict. We had to gradually wean him off on unhealthy foods. Since we transitioned him to healthy meals his dentist visits are less traumatic.

  31. Flossing is a way of life in our home. I used to work at an Orthodontic practice and that was one thing that I brought back (besides brushing). Not only is it important for your teeth but your overall health. I heard, and I can't remember where, that you add years to your life jut by flossing.

  41. We have to work really hard at our house to fight cavities, even with a healthy diet, so tips that help us out -- only water between meals, keep juices/tea/etc. for meals/snacks when you know you're going to brush teeth. And keep dentist-approved Sugarfree gum on hand in car/purse/etc., for those times when you can't get to a toothbrush for a while.:-) creedamy[at] yahoo [dot]com
