How to Prepare for the 1st Day of School!!!

The first day of school can be incredibly stressful, especially if you haven't prepared yourself. As a parent, it's always a difficult decision for us. Do we let the kids enjoy the last few weeks of Summer by letting them stay up late or do we start easing into a schedule now so that when that first day comes, they will be rested and prepared for the new schedule?!  We have done it both ways and now that we are in the last weeks of Summer vacation, we have really started going full force in preparing for the first day while still enjoying what days we have left of Summer!

First off, I suggest you go and find your supply list and get that out of the way!  I think when the kids have their supplies, it starts to sink in that school really is just around the corner!

Second, ease into the school routine a few weeks before school actually starts. My kids love to sleep late in the Summer so we are starting to make them go to bed an hour earlier and get up an hour earlier every week until school starts. The week before school starts they should be pretty close to the times they will need to go to bed and get up. Generally our children go to bed at 9:00 p.m. on school nights and they get up at 7:00 a.m. for school.  This gives them 10 hours of rest which is pretty close to what is suggested at their ages. You might have to adjust depending on the ages of your children!

Third, if they haven't done much academics through the Summer, now is a great time to get them back into the swing of things. Have them read before bed. Print them off some worksheets from the internet. A little bit goes a long way!

Finally, come up with a plan on how your daily routines will work. After we go shopping for new clothes, I like to put outfits together in the kids drawers and in their closets so they can pick their own outfits.  We lay them out at night so when the kids get up in the morning, they can put their clothes on before they come downstairs.  After they come down, they have breakfast, brush teeth and get their hair fixed. After school, they immediately get a snack and do homework. Then the rest of the evening will be dinner,  free time and/or soccer for our family. Showers and teeth brushing are right before bed. We try to keep our routine simple so they can fall into it easily and it's easier to stick to!

What do you do to get your kids ready for the BIG first day of school?!

I haven't had to experience any of this yet, since my only child is just now one. But I do enjoy reading about your experiences! Thanks for having such a great blog. I really appreciate all of your hard work! :)

ugh, having six kids going this year, I can tell you 1. we don't have all the school supplies, if we did, it would probably take a full paycheck...seriously a lot of school supplies and 2. I did have them reading and working on workbooks all summer, so at least I did get that far lol
3. I haven't even gotten uniforms yet and school starts Monday (they did meet teachers though lol) thanks for the list

You forgot about getting grandma to make the kids all coffee cake for breakfast on the first day of school.
