Making Kids Healthy Lunches to Take to School

When you have 4 children, all who eat different types of foods, it can get difficult when it comes to preparing meals! I have an extremely picky 9 year old who insists on packing lunch almost every day for school so I am constantly searching for creative ways to get him the nutrients he needs without packing him the same boring lunch every single day! When I pack a lunch for my kids to take to school, I try to include foods that will give them energy to keep them going for the rest of the day but also foods that are healthy so I know they are getting the things they need.  I try to avoid fatty foods like potato chips and snack cakes and include a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. My kids don't have the option to heat lunches either so that makes it even more of a challenge to pack healthy lunches.

Important Health Tip: Make sure your child's lunchbox has the tools to keep food cool until lunch time!!  Our kids generally have to put their lunchboxes in the classroom or in the hallway and it's not air conditioned so I worry about keeping food cold enough especially because my older 2 eat so much later in the day!

Here is a list of my kids favorite things to pack in their lunches!

Peanut Butter Sandwich
Turkey Sandwich
Ham Sandwich
Sliced Apples
Orange Slices
Fruit Salad
Fruit Kabobs
Baby Carrots
Sliced Cucumbers
Cheese Chunks
String Cheese
Yogurt Tubes
Graham Crackers
Granola Bars
100% Juice
Sunny D
Flavored Water
Omega-Rich Trail Mix (Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Nuts and Granola)
Fruit Snacks

To make things easier, we like to clean all of our fruit and divide them up at the beginning of the week and then the kids can just grab the things they want and toss them in their lunchboxes. Kids are much more likely to eat a lunch that they helped pack!

What are some easy things you like to put in your kids lunches?!

  1. Wouldn't it be great if they could heat their lunches? It would be great to have more options that the same old cold meat or PB&J as the feature dish of the lunch, right? And a thermos just doesn't cut it when your kid eats later in the day.

  2. Definitely. I hate packing the kids the same thing over and over again but sometimes there isn't any other option!! Drew and Caden won't be eating until past 1:00 this year! Ugh. Hard to believe they will have to wait that long to eat their lunches.

I love comments!! Thanks for taking the time!
