Riding the Bus

My kids have never been bus riders. I have always taken them to school and picked them up at the end of the day because we always lived in town, less than 5 minutes away from their elementary school.  After we moved to the country and Aiden was born, however, it became such an inconvenience that eventually I started letting them ride the bus.  They rode the bus for about 5 months of the school year last year and although it wasn't their favorite thing to do, they were troopers and they realized that it helped Mom out A LOT!!! They were one of the last pick ups and the first drop offs so they were on the bus for less than 25 minutes each way so it wasn't too terribly bad considering we live 15 minutes out of town now.

This year I had intended for them to ride the bus again.  That is until I got a call last night from the bus driver telling me they had changed the route. They want to pick my kids up at 7:25 A.M. which is a full 35 minutes earlier than last year, meaning they would spend over an hour on the bus each way. So now I am seriously contemplating taking them BACK off the bus. I hate to do that because the kids riding the bus has saved us a lot of time and money but the truth is, I can't imagine being on a bus for that long and to think of my kids being on a bus for 2 hours a day just does not sit will with me, especially because I can get them there in less than 15 minutes. Ugggggggggggggggggggh. I hate that they sprung this one me so suddenly, especially because school starts TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And not only that, but they have several nights where they all 3 of soccer games that they have to be at by 5!!!!!!!!!  If they aren't getting off the bus until 4:45 every day, there is no way we will make it. Maybe in the winter it will be ok but for now, I just don't see how it is going to work. Double Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Do your kids ride a bus? If so, how long do they ride each day?

  1. My son is in 1st grade. He does not ride the bus yet. I did when I lived in the country and I had an extra 2 hours tacked on my day!

  2. We live close to school, so Mica gets a ride with Daddy. It does mess up his work schedule. His work is more flexible then mine is!

  3. I never had a long bus ride, but I had friends who did. They all did their homework on the bus!

  4. My oldest rode the bus, but he was in a special preschool because he is delayed. However, this year, he is doing a Young 5 and my daughter will be doing 4 year pre-school and my 2 y/o will be in playgroup - so I will be driving everyday. Once they are in elementary, I will still be driving because we are doing school of choice so no buses :(

I love comments!! Thanks for taking the time!
