Arm & Hammer Advance White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste Review

My family has always used a different variety of teeth whtening products because my husband and I are obsessed with white teeth!  I don't even want to think about how much money we have wasted on products that promise to whiten teeth only to leave us disappointed and wishing we could get our money back!  We have tried several different whitening toothpastes and we were recently sent a tube of Arm & Hammer Advance White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste to try out!  This is the first time we have ever tried this product and we were pleasantly surprised by the results!  I have always seen it on the shelves in the stores but have never gotten around to try it so I was super excited to finally get the chance to put it to the test!
The Claim:

*Removes up to 5x more plaque in hard to reach places

* Cleans deep down, in between teeth and along the gumline

*Clinically proven to Whiten teeth

*Penetrates tiny crevices to clean away deep stains

*Safely polishes for whiter and brighter teeth

The Truth:

My husband is a coffee drinker and he recently stopped drinking coffee because of the stains it was leaving on his teeth. After just a few days of using this product, his teeth were noticeably whiter! I couldn't believe how noticeable it was! I have seen a lot of toothpastes claim to whiten teeth but have never really seen one give such quick results! The toothpaste tastes great and it leaves our teeth feeling so fresh and clean. I love how my teeth feel when I leave the Dentist after a good cleaning and this is exactly how my teeth feel after I use the Arm & Hammer Advance White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste! When I use this toothpaste, I don't feel bad about skipping the floss when I am running late because I can actually feel it working between my teeth and in places that are harder to brush. I can't help but to keep running my tongue over my teeth because they feel so clean and smooth long after I have brushed my teeth! I feel confident knowing that my teeth are nice and clean after I brush using the Arm & Hammer Advance White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste and it will definitely be on our shopping list in the future! We have had the chance to use it now for an entire month and we would choose this toothpaste any day of the week because we are so pleased with the results!!

*Disclosure: This is a sponsored post for Church & Dwight Co., Inc, the maker of ARM & HAMMER branded products, who is paying me to try different products. It's a LONG weekend, YAY!

I am not so sure why I am so excited to be having a long weekend, after all, it's my hubby's weekend to WORK but I am still super excited!!

Last night, our 9 year old had his first game for his All-Star baseball team. They are playing in Wapakoneta, Ohio which is about 30 minutes from home. Their game was at 6:30 so we had plenty of time to get there after school but I was so bummed that my husband had to work and had to miss it. Not to mention hauling 4 kiddos to the ballpark alone is no easy task!!!! Our team is mostly 8 and 9 year olds and we played an older, 10 year old team. We hung with them most of the game but fell behind them by like 6 or 7 runs by the last inning. We were disappointed but out of nowhere in the bottom of the last inning, with 2 outs and a batter will a full count, our boys rallied and we ended up WINNING!!! I absolutely LOVED seeing our boys so excited and happy. They were yelling and encouraging one another saying "We can do it" and it was just so fun watching them!!!!  This is the 3rd year that they have been on this team together and it is ALWAYS a blast to watch them play! We are playing in this league and the boys will have games every Friday evening and then we are playing in 3-4 tournaments over the Summer too. We love their coaches and all of the parents too. We line the baseball fields with tents and coolers and we just have fun together. That is what baseball is all about to me!  We just have FUN! Sometimes we win. Sometimes we lose. But we always have fun!

Awwww. My little guy is getting so big!  The bats used to look huge compared to him but now he's 9 and he is just getting so big!!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful looooooooooong weekend too!  Hubby is actually off work Monday so we will get to have a cookout with my parents and my sisters and their families too.  Have fun and be safe!

Lotus Home Cleaning System Review and Giveaway Ends 6/4 $219 RV!

I wouldn't call myself obsessed when it comes to killing germs but I am a very cautious mom and I do everything I can to make sure the foods my family are eating are as healthy and clean as possible. Same goes with my house. With a toddler and 3 other children, it makes me feel good to know that my house is a clean and safe place for my children to live. I am one of those people who prefer to clean with plain, good ole' water so I was absolutely ecstatic to have the chance to review the Lotus Home Cleaning System from Tersano!!!

How it Works:

The lotus® patent technology infuses cold tap water with an extra oxygen atom, creating a natural sanitizer. By passing air through 4,500 volts of electricity, the lotus® system splits oxygen molecules into atoms and forces this extra atom to combine and form liquefied ozone. The third oxygen atom becomes the sanitizing agent, a natural oxidant -- which kills bacteria and viruses, and neutralizes pesticides.

Tersano’s lotus Sanitizing System is revolutionizing the household cleaning products industry through its patented Oxyshield™ process which turns ordinary tap water into a powerfully effective, yet harmless sanitizing agent. Water that is oxygenated with the lotus system is 50% stronger and 3,000 times faster than bleach as a cleaner, yet is safe enough for contact with a baby’s skin. It removes 99.99% of all toxins, germs, and bacteria; on fruits and vegetables it removes virtually all traces of pesticides—something that rinsing in ordinary water won’t do.

Cool, huh?! All you need is cold tap water and within minutes, you will have an amazing cleaning agent that you can use to clean and sanitize your entire house!!

What we thought:

We definitely put the Lotus Home Cleaning System to the test! When I opened it and found all the parts in the box, I was worried it was going to be one of those products that were such a pain to use that you would put it under the cabinet and never look at it again. Not the case here!

The system was super easy to set up for the first time! I just unwrapped everything, inserted the filter cartridge and it was ready to use!  I love how it works to clean produce so the first time I used it was to clean a bag of apples that I had just bought!  I was so impressed with how easy and how quickly the machine worked! You simply put the water and produce in the bowl, sit it on the machine, select which accessory you are using and then hit start. It shows you the progress on the front and after a few minutes, it will get to 100% and the process is complete!  Not only does this machine help clean your produce though, but it also helps it taste better and stay fresh longer!!! You can also use the bowl for other things too! I love using it to put all of our little guy's toys! He throws them on the floor and on the ground out in public and he constantly chews on them so this is a great way to sanitize them safely and effectively!!!

The second time we used the machine was with the spray bottle. I like to clean with plain water so I was excited to use the spray bottle!  All I ahd to do was fill the bottle to the fill line with cold tap water, stick it on the machine, choose the accessory and again, just push start and within minutes I had super water (that's what my kids call it) to clean my house with!  The machine even keeps a timer for you because the water in the spray bottle only stays "super water" for 15 minutes before it reverts back to its original state. Super water, super cool!

If you are looking for safer ways to keep your house safe and clean, you definitely should check out the Lotus Home Cleaning System from Tersano! If you visit their website at http://www.tersano.com/ you can see all of the great features these products have to offer!!!

Kids and Storms! How to Make it Easier for Everyone!

It seems like this Spring has been an extremely bad season for storms here in Ohio and across the rest of the United States. I can honestly say that in the almost 30 years that I have been living, I cannot ever recall a time where we have had such awful weather. Our children haven't been able to play outside much (which takes a toll on everybody!!!) and even worse, it hasn't just been the rain that has been a pain. It's the storms!  We have had the worst thunderstorms that I can ever recall having and it has left children around here feeling very anxious and scared, and with the devastating storms that we have seen, I can't say I blame them.

My 9 year old son and I were on our way home from a soccer tournament just a few weeks ago when we suddenly heard tornado sirens. I looked around, didn't see any signs of storms coming so we figured that city must have been testing their sirens, no big deal. A minute later I had a text message from another Mom from the team saying, "A tornado is coming, get out of town." I thought she was joking so I sent something back messing around with her. It was at that time that I turned on the radio and it was coming across that there was, in fact, a tornado coming! It had already touched down 10 miles to the south of us and we were heading right into its path. So I did the only thing I could think to do and that was step on the gas and get as far away as possible before it hit. Luckily we made it home but in the process of doing so, my son looks at me and asks, "Are we going to die?" And this has pretty much been the way things have went all Spring, every time a storm rolls into town. Our 9 year old is immediately terrified and asks a million questions about the weather and what's going on. I thought as the oldest child, he would be the one who would be brave but what I realized was that as the oldest child, he is the one who understands how bad these storms can be and he is now old enough to know what kind of destruction they are capable of producing.

So wouldn't you know, our misfortune hit again last night which wasn't a good thing because our children saw on the news and talked at school about the tornado in Joplin, Missouri. We were at tee-ball practice last night and I got a text on my phone from the Sheriff Department issuing a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. A lot of the parents watched the sky as it turned all kinds of wicked colors and then right before the storm hit, they decide to evacuate the building and send everyone home! Now let me tell you. The last place I wanted to be with my 4 children with THIS looming overhead was outside in a mini van, driving down the highway!!

Here are the clouds when we left practice!

Here they were as we arrived home!!!

The clouds were extremely frightening looking and I have to admit, I even felt a little panic myself. After all, our town was hit by an F1 tornado just a month ago that wiped out a grocery store and damaged several homes. We got home right as the storm really got started. It had been raining but the winds had not yet arrived. I sent the kids quickly inside while I got the baby. Right as the kids got in, the 70mph winds hit and all I could hear was shattering glass as the wind busted the windows out. I grabbed Aiden as fast as I could and ran for the door. The wind was so strong I couldn't open it. A weather gauge that we had hanging on the side of the house blew off and sliced my elbow open as I tried to protect Aiden from getting hit. I couldn't get in the house through the front door so I handed the baby to Emma through a window and ran to the other side of the house to use another door. Once inside, the sound of the wind was terrifying and I sent the kids to our safe place until it passed. Thankfully it passed quickly but the fear of the entire situation was terrifying for our children. Luckily, I have learned some great tips to share with you on things you can try if your child is afraid of thunderstorms. There's nothing worse than your child being scared and you not being able to soothe them or make them feel better so maybe some of these things will help your child cope too! I know these are the things that have helped us survive!

1.) Make your own "storm kit" filled with things to do to occupy your child(ren) during storms. Include necessities like flashlights, extra batteries, snacks, bottles of water, anything you might need in case you have to take shelter for awhile. We also included things in our kit like card games and we let each of the children include one of their favorite kind of toys like special stuffed animals, etc. that make them feel more secure.

2.)  If it's storming but not bad enough that you have to take shelter, try occupying them with a movie and popcorn!  We snuggle up together and let the kids pick their favorite movie and we just enjoy the time together. We keep our favorite "movie theatre candy" in the pantry for these special times too. It might cost $5 at the theatre but the local dollar store has these same boxes of candy for $1 so we try to keep some in the pantry for times like these.

3.)  Have a Thunderstorm party! Make popcorn and play games.

4.) Let them sleep with you. If you aren't comfortable with that, consider having an air mattress available to put on the floor for your child(ren) to sleep on. Just being close to you sometimes is all it takes.

5.)  Make up stories about what you think the thunder sounds are coming from. When I was little, my Mom told us it was God moving his furniture. Play this game with your kids and have them guess what they think the sound is!

6.) Build a fort and have a camp out inside the house!

7.)  Invest in a sound machine that has storm sounds. Our children have one of these and half the time when it storms at night, they don't even wake up because they are so used to sleeping with the sound anyway! Or you can buy CD's that have the same sounds.

8.)  Be a good example! Stay calm and show the kids that you aren't scared and they shouldn't be either.

9.)  Take your kids to a science museum and let them learn about the weather. Our 9 year old is fascinated with the weather and how things work.

10.)  Show them the fun side of storms! After the storm ends, let them jump in the puddles. Look for a rainbow.

11.) Be patient. Understanding. Supportive. This too shall pass.

What to do with Spoiled Children!

You are standing in line at the grocery and you see a child throwing a HUGE tantrum because they aren't getting what they want. Inside, you are secretly thinking, "Thank God that isn't my child!"  And even though your kids might act the same way at times, you are probably thinking what a SPOILED brat that kid is! I know I have been there and I have had that EXACT thought but what do you do when it IS your child?!  My husband and I have been doing a LOT of talking lately and we have to figure out how to undo years of spoiling to get our children back on track again. We have realized that we are not doing them any favors by continuing the bad behavior because sooner or later, they are going to be in for a rude awakening when they find out that the entire world is not going to bow down to their feet and give them what they want all of the time like we have. If we don't teach them to deal with small disappointments NOW, how will they ever cope with BIG disappointments in the future?

Shockingly, I read this week that 95% of parents feel that their children are spoiled but they don't know how to fix it!  So it feels good to know, we are not alone!

So what is spoiling anyway?

There are 2 definitions in the dictionary for spoiling.

(1) To treat someone or something in an indulgent way
(2) To harm (a child, pet, etc) by the kind of over-indulgence that will lead to selfish behavior, unreasonable expectations of others, etc

So why do parents spoil their kids if it's going to hurt them in the end?

That's a good question. I know my husband and I try to give our kids whatever they want because we didn't get a lot of that stuff when we were kids. I rarely got new clothes because I had an older sister so I got hand-me-downs and my parents didn't have enough money for me to do a lot of the fun stuff our kids get to do so we sat at home a lot. When our kids ask for something I hate to tell them no because I don't want to disappoint my kids. And other parents are the same way. Even though we know they can live without it and it's not going to kill them not to have it, we still would rather not disappoint them so we just give in no matter what kind of sacrifices we have to make for it.  I don't think parents WANT to raise selfish children who put too much value in material possessions but we do it to make up for things that were lacking in our own childhoods or even our adulthood and we don't want our children to do without. And sadly, as in the case of my husband and I, parents don't realize the damage it is doing until the kids are older and by then, I just wonder if it's too late to fix?

My husband and I have always mistakenly thought giving our children all of the STUFF that they want would make for happy kids but what we are learning now that our children are getting older is that it just makes them want more. We purchase them the latest and greatest in everything and it gets played with for 5 minutes and then tossed to the side and never touched again.  We want our children to be liked, we want them to be able to keep up with their friends at school and we want to show others that we love our children so much that we will do anything for them. And THIS is what results in spoiling our children.

I think a huge step in the unspoiling process is figuring out WHY we are doing it!  Do we do it because we are tired and it's a fix solution to avoid a tantrum? Do we do it because we are so busy today that we feel like we aren't spending enough time with our children? Maybe you are like my husband and you buy your children the toys that HE likes to play with too?! Whatever it is, figuring out the WHY will surely help fix things in the end!

So what do children really NEED?

While we want to believe that these things will make for happy children, there are really only a few things that truly will make a child happy inside and out and one of those things is unconditional love.  Of course our kids know that we love them. We are very affectionate and tell them often but I can't help but wonder have we also taught them that material things equate love? In their eyes, if we don't give them the things they want, does that mean we don't love them?  Of course not but that is the message we are sending to our children and we need it to stop. Today.

Children need parents who are willing to give them their most valuable asset, their TIME!  Sit and read with your child(ren), teach them to climb a tree, plant flowers, make up funny stories. Material things will give your child temporary happiness but these things that you give to them will be long lasting, permanent and will result in self-sufficient, happy children!

Is your child Spoiled?

Go through this checklist and see if your child exhibits any of these traits!

•have frequent temper tantrums

•act very demanding and always want to get his own way

•get frustrated easily

•fight, protest, or say "no" to everything

•rarely follow your rules

•rarely listen when you say "no" or "stop"

•frequently try to control other children and adults

•frequently complain that he is bored and will not play on his own

•have little respect for what other people want

•not follow a schedule and just does things when he wants to, including choosing nap time, when to go to bed, and what to eat

•demand to have every new toy that he sees on TV

•frequently interrupt you (and not in the polite way by saying "excuse me") when you are on the phone, etc.

•not understand that there are consequences for not following the rules

•keep you from going out to dinner or doing other things in public because you are afraid of how he will act

•need bribes to get him to do anything

•frequently hit, bite, and yell when he doesn't get his way

•usually have trouble playing with other kids because he is always bossy and never shares

•scare away every babysitter within 20 miles of your home

•play with new toys for about 5 minutes and then wants something new

If so, your child just might be spoiled!

So can you UNSPOIL a child?

This is a great question because my hubby and I don't know what to do to fix this problem we have caused. Our children are 1, 6, 8 and 9 and we are afraid if we don't fix it fast, it's going to be too late. I think we still have a chance with our 1 year old, Aiden, so if we can "fix" the other 3, we will be good to go!

First of all, you and your partner must stand together in agreement. Don't be wishy washy. You must be committed!!  This means even when your child cries and begs and screams, you are going to stand strong, be firm and DON'T change your mind! Even if you and the other parent are no longer together, you must still agree, even if it kills you! (If you want to turn things around, anyway)

Second, do NOT make threats. This is our worst enemy. My husband and I both are so guilty of this. "Don't make me tell you again! I won't tell you one more time. This is your last warning!" And of course it goes on and on and nothing ever happens! We have talked about it and we will no longer give idle threats. No more counting to 3. No more threatening consequences that we know we will never dish out. We are giving our children a list of our expectations so they will know what they are from the beginning and no more warnings will be given!  Maybe your family can sit down and make a chart together of what is expected of them and what the consequences will be. Have your children repeat them back to you so you know they understand! I am working on one of these right now for our home and I hope it helps!

Third, we have vowed from here on out to be parents, not friends. We want our children to be able to come to us and talk to us but they also need to know that WE are the parents, NOT them! Even if I have to sound like my own Mother and say stuff like, "Because I said so!" then so be it! From here on out, we are Mom and Dad and what we say goes, no matter who likes it!  I read that a survey by the Center for a New American Dream found that kids will ask for something an average of nine times before the parents cave. I have never counted but I bet that is pretty accurate. Emma wanted to stay up an entire hour last night to watch a premier that was coming on. I think she might have asked 100 times and that doesn't count the stomping, crying and yelling that she did each time I said no. But I felt good that I stuck to it and when I went to bed, I felt accomplished.

Fourth, there will be no more bribing. No more bartering. We will not bribe our  kids to pick up the messes that THEY made. We will not pay our children to do things for us that they should be doing anyway. They will do it because it is what is expected of them and when they don't follow through, they will have consequences!  Our kids are awful about this. Joshua wanted to stay up later the other night and I had already told him no. I was changing the baby and I asked him to grab me the baby wipes off of the step and he says to  me, "If I get them for you, can I stay up later." And it infuriated me. Something so simple that I asked him to do was met with a "What will you do for me if I do something for you?" And I think it was at that moment that I really realized that we have a problem in our house.

Next, we are bracing ourselves for the meltdowns. We know it's going to happen. But the sooner we get it over with, the better. After our children see that Mom and Dad aren't going to give in, I think the tantrums will stop. I am expecting this the most out of our 8 year old daughter. Being the only girl, she's the Princess and used to getting what she wants.

And lastly, we will BUY less. There is no reason for Emma to have 20 pairs of flip flops. They don't have to get a prize every time we go to the store. Instead, I will be giving them the gift of teaching them the life skills of appreciation and patience. I will make them work for and earn the things that they receive and we will not be focusing so much on material things. When our children come home and they want something new, we will talk about why they want it and then we will suggest they save their allowance and purchase it themselves or they can add it to their birthday or holiday wish list. This is especially hard for us with our oldest son, Drew. I don't know what it is about the oldest child but we literally give him whatever he wants. Sometimes he doesn't even have to ask for it, we just will get it because we know he would like it. He has been looking at soccer goals online for a couple of weeks now. My first instinct was to tell my husband to get online and purchase it for him but I have resisted and I have been giving him suggestions on what he can do to save the money more quickly so he can buy it. I have even given him extra things to do around the house to earn extra money. In the end, as much as I want to buy it for him, I think he is going to feel incredibly accomplished when he gets the money to go buy it for himself.

I honestly think that increasing the time between the "I want" and "I get" will make for much happier children. If I bought Drew the soccer goal right now, it would be the normal instant gratification they always get...but now the excitement and anticipation will build as his piggy bank fills and he realizes he is getting closer to that coveted prize that he wants so badly!  Also, I think making them wait sometimes might actually make them realize they don't want something so badly after all. Something they want RIGHT NOW they might want nothing to do with in 3 months.

Instead of shopping, maybe Emma and I will sit down with a bowl of popcorn and watch a chick flick. Or maybe Daddy can make an effort to spend more time out back with the boys tossing the baseball and kicking the soccer ball. I am certain that THESE times are the times my children will enjoy and remember.  Not when we stood in line at midnight to get them the newest video game that has just been released.

So what do you think?! Are your kids spoiled? What are your ideas for other parents to help UNDO the spoiling or are you on the other side of the fence and do you feel like it's ok to spoil your children? I would love to hear what you all think!

I'm a BAD Mom!

This weekend was super busy, even more than normal! Drew had a baseball game at 10:00 a.m. We then had Emma and Joshua's birthday parties at 1:00 p.m. and then Drew had his last soccer game of the season at 6:00 p.m. I knew it was going to be a busy day so I was up by 6:30 yesterday morning running around like a crazy lady getting everything together.

We got to the park and the sun was blazing. Because we aren't used to the sun (I told you, Ohio has had AWFUL weather lately!!!) I immediately realized I had forgotten sunscreen. I didn't freak out though because it was still early when the sun wasn't at its hottest and I figured, how long could a little league baseball game take anyway?! HA! Let me answer that question for you. It took a loooooooooooooooooooooong time! 2.5 hours to be exact. I had to leave early to go decorate for the party and pick up last second items before the party.

Soooooo, I get to the park where we are having the party and UH OH! To my surprise, the shelter house was full and these people were having a GRADUATION party! I immediately flipped. I felt my eyes welling with tears as I called my hubby who was still at the ballpark and asked him what the heck we should do. Luckily, the people were very nice and let us have a picnic table which we set up in the shade, crisis averted! I couldn't believe it turned out so well. The kids could care less, all they wanted to do was play anyway so I freaked out for nothing! I had just been worried because my aunt made a beautiful cake for Emma and I was afraid I wasn't going to have anywhere to set it up!!!

This is the top layer! Isn't it adorable?! My aunt did an AWESOME job!

She made the bottom 2 layers cupcakes and they were soooo cute! (And yummy!)

So back to me being a bad Mom. *lol* By time we got home yesterday, everyone was exhausted. The older 3 went home to stay the night w/ Grandma and Grandpa and they kept the baby for a couple of hours too so hubby and I got to go out on a date! We went to Red Lobster and it was soooooo nice being able to enjoy a dinner without any kids!!! When we got back, I noticed the kids were all sunburnt. All 4 of them. Not terrible burns but enough where I felt like a BAD MOM! I can't believe I forgot sunblock yesterday. This is only the beginning of Summer and we will be out in the sun constantly for the next 3 months!  I am going out today to buy a bottle to keep in both the car and the van and another to keep at home.

Do you ever have "Bad Mom" moments or am I the only one? lol

Coaching Little League Sports

If you have been reading my blog for any period of time, by now you have to know that we are HUGE into sports! All 3 of our children play in organized sports and our 15 month old is sure to follow as his favorite word and most coveted toy is a ball (or anything round that even resembles a ball!) Any day of the week you will find him with a ball in each hand and balls all around him. I see pitching in his future! He has quite an arm already!! *LOL*

We just finished up Spring soccer with our 9 year old and now we are going full force with our 6, 8 and 9 year olds with softball, baseball and t-ball.  I was just charting their games the other night and on some nights, all 3 have games, at the same time at different parks.  *lol* Thank God for Grandma and Grandpa is all I can say!!! We ended up not doing so hot in the soccer league but did earn runner's up in a recent tournament and that was way fun! They aren't the best players out there but I have to say, they are definitely the cutest! Love them!

Anyhoo, our 8 and 9 year olds both play for our city Recreation Department. Emma just started her first year of softball. She isn't athletic at all. I swear she has 2 left feet and spends most of her time tripping and falling. She doesn't like to be hot and hates wearing a helmet because it messes up her hair and makes her even hotter. So I have to admit I was shocked when she wanted to play softball and even more shocked when she had her first softball game this week and managed to get 2 awesome hits. She loved it and I am so happy! I want my kids to love sports and the fact that the PRINCESS didn't mind getting all hot and sweaty and dirty makes me a happy Mama!

Here she is running home from 3rd base. I didn't tell her this, but she runs like a girl! *lol*

Then we have our little Joshy! This is his FIRST year of  Tee-Ball and he is SOOOOO excited to play! After 6 years of watching his big brother play sports, it is definitely his time!  He is playing in a local church league and it has to be among one of the best tee-ball programs ever.  I am not sure if he really loves to play though or if he just likes to get dirty. What do you think?! *lol* He looks pretty content here completely covered in MUD!

No, seriously though. He loooooooves to play ball and even though it was rainy and muddy again this week, he was able to go to practice. They just had it indoors which was, well, interesting to say the least. It was definitely LOUD and CRAZY but the kids had a blast! Here he is (The little guy in red) working on catching fly balls!

So our Summer is off to a BUSY BUSY start. School is out in a couple of weeks and we are going to be "Go, go, go" for the next couple of months. Do any of your kids play organized sports?! And if so, does your city have a recreation department? I love our children playing sports but I have a LOT of complaints with our city rec department this year.

I could write a book on how much I hate it actually. First of all, each player is required to pay $25 to play. That is pocket change to some people but for some children in our community, it's a HUGE deal and they are unable to play because their family is unable to pay.
Second, they don't even ask what size uniform your child needs and they just order a bunch of shirts and you just have to pray your child gets on that fits! This year, our minor league boys team got all ADULT sized shirts. These are kids that are 9 and 10 years old and our team ranges from boys who weigh 50 pounds to boys who weigh in excess of 150 pounds and they give us all the same size shirts. So my 9 year old who is among the smallest on the team has a shirt that goes past his knees. Nice, huh?!  And the thing that bothers me the most is that these shirts are paid for by SPONSORS so the $25 goes entirely to expenses and overhead. They tell a kid he can't play because they don't pay yet the shirts and hats have already been paid for by a local company. Makes no sense to me.

3rd,  I have NO clue where they find their coaches. I know most are probably just volunteers but it's like they don't screen them or train them or anything and then you get a bunch of idiots our there who couldn't coach a group of monkeys, let alone children.

Case in point.

This weekend, our son had his first game! We were so excited and so were our kids. It has rained a TON here in Ohio and we have not spent much time at the ballpark so we were all ready to play baseball!  First off, our coaches are very mellow.  One is my hubby and the other is a Dad of one of the boys who plays on Drew's All-Star teams. All they are concerned with is teaching the kids the fundamentals, making sure nobody gets hurt and most importantly, making sure the kids have fun. And boy did they ever! Even though half of them struck out at least once and our pitchers who have never pitched in their lives probably each walked a dozen batters, they had a blast! We won our first game and the kids were ecstatic!  THAT is what it is all about. We had a lot of parents from our team comment on how enjoyable it was and how much they liked our coaches and how positive they were.

Drew pitched for his first time (minus the couple times he had to in a tournament last year) and I was so proud of him! He looked so little out on that pitchers mound though. Kind of made me sad to see him doing something so BIG!

But let me tell you about the coaches from the other team.

They were LOUD! Anything but mellow. You could hear them screaming 2 baseball diamonds down, that's how loud they were!  I heard VERY little positive comments from them and they berated their players. I sat there watching just fuming. If my kid was on that team, I would have stood up and took him out right then and there (After giving those coaches an earful.)  I heard the head coach threatening them the ENTIRE game on how they would "regret it if they lost." THEN, they made their kids run up and down a huge hill after they lost. It was high 80's and they had just got done playing a 2.5 hour baseball game. They were hot and tired. And they got PUNISHED for losing!  I felt like the coaches should have been the one's running the hill. (I can guarantee you that the head coach wouldn't have made it 2 steps he was so out of shape!) There were many parents INFURIATED by these coaches and how they treated their kids. To my surprise, there were also a couple who said they liked them and stood by them. This tells me that these few probably treat their kids the same way at home if they feel it's acceptable to treat kids like that. Maybe it's the nurturing Mama in me, I don't know, but I found these coaches to be among the worst of the worst. And I made a list in my head of things I would like to say to them and I thought I would share them. If you are a coach or thinking about being one, maybe you might benefit from them too! And if you have a kid on a team with coaches like this, REPORT THEM! These type of coaches cause severe damage to the self esteem of innocent children!!!

1. Some of these kids have never played sports in their entire lives. Give them a break!

2. This is the age where kids decide if they LOVE sports or HATE them. Don't contribute to them HATING them! Make it fun and enjoyable so they WANT to play!

3. Kids respond much better to CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM than being berated. Don't ever make a child feel like they aren't good enough and don't ever yell at them and embarass them! That is completely uncalled for. If you have a problem with something, pull them aside and talk to them privately.

4. Quit blaming the kids! If they aren't doing something right, it's because they are inexperienced and because YOU haven't taught them well enough. Take the time to show them how to do it right.

5. Quit pointing out all of the stuff they are doing wrong and praise them for what they are doing right! Coaches have the opportunity to be POWERFUL role models!  You might be the only positive influence in that child's life. You might be the only person who ever tells a certain boy or girl that you are proud of them and they have done well. Take your role as a coach seriously but not so serious that you DAMAGE the kids. It's your job to make them BETTER!

6. Stop for a minute and realize they are just KIDS! These are precious little children who want to be part of a team. Don't expect them to learn the skills after a couple of practices. It takes a long time for some kids to catch on to certain skills and it takes YEARS to master them and even then, there's always room for improvement!!!

7. DON'T punish them for losing! Even the best teams lose sometimes.  This takes all of the FUN out of the sport and makes it all about WINNING or LOSING and that isn't even close to what it is about!

8. Sometimes its frustrating when you are a coach and the kids aren't catching on to the skills as fast as you think they should. But you still have to be an example, show good sportsmanship and show them that sports are FUN!  If you find yourself constantly losing your temper, coaching might not be your thing!!!

9.  The four most powerful words a coach can ever use...."I Believe in You." If you don't show your players that YOU believe in them, they aren't going to believe in themselves. Instead of berating your pitcher (who has never pitched a baseball game in his life!) go out on the mound, pat him on the back, look him in the eye and tell him that he can do it and that you believe in him. You won't believe the difference. And guess what?! They will believe in YOU as their coach too!

10. Focus on the PROCESS, not the RESULTS! It doesn't matter if they win or lose. It's all about the process and how they get to that point. Teach them to play the sport. Nothing more or less is expected from you. This is is little league. You aren't in the MLB. You aren't coaching the NBA. You aren't the star of the NHL. It's Little League. Relax. Have fun. And be glad you get to have a part in a child's life.

And NOW I am getting off of my soapbox for the today!  Hope you all had an awesome weekend!
