Heart Murmurs in Children

I have seen my fair share of the pediatrician in the past week so it's a good thing I like her so much! I had our 2 year old there last week because he has been battling this sinus stuff for over a month now. He had already been through 2 different antibiotics when I took him in last week and he was diagnosed with an ear infection and bronchitis so we had to get a breathing machine and go through yet another antibiotic. When we went back 4 days later for a recheck, the bronchitis was better but the ear infection had spread to his other ear. We were also told that they could hear a soft heart murmur and they want us to go see a pediatric Cardiologist just to make sure nothing serious was going on.

Today we went back to the pediatrician with Josh and Emma who have been battling the same symptoms.  They ended up giving Emma an inhaler to help with the bronchitis and they diagnosed Josh with a double ear infection. He also has a super sore throat but even worse, they told us that they discovered a very prominent heart murmur in him as well! Because his was significantly worse, they got Children's to get him in stat to take a look at him. We will go next Monday and check things out and make sure things are ok.

Ahhhhhhhhhh. I hate when my kids are sick. I am not freaking out about the heart murmurs because I know they can be nothing. I was diagnosed with one at 18 months old. My Mom has one, her mom had one and my neice also has one. So I know that they do exist and can mean absolutely nothing but it's that chance that it could be something that freaks me out.  I know that heart murmurs that come and go are usually the kind that are not serious and because we have been to the pediatrician so much and they haven't always heard it gives me some hope.  But I also know that 1 in 100 children are born with a heart defect or structural heart problem and this is the part that scares me.  He has been getting short of breath and complaining of chest pain so this makes me think maybe it IS something worse than just an innocent murmur.  He told me just last week that "those rotten girls keep catching him at school because he has to take breaks because they chase him so much." LOL I love that boy.

My murmur is caused by a Septal defect.......I have a hole in my heart.  Because of the hole, it causes extra blood flow and can cause the murmur.  This can also make the heart work too hard and can cause the heart to enlarge. Now that I think about it, I should probably get mine checked out as it has been many years since I have had it checked.

How about you? Do you or one of your children have a heart murmur?

Hi...
I do know it's common, but it's always good to get it checked because you just never know. My son does not have one, but I found out I had one in my 20's, so they never picked it up when I was a child. Apparently, they can be very hard to find sometimes. Since you have one, you can just watch it, that's what we do with my son. So far, he has not had one, so try not to stress over it. You sound like an awesome mom!

I know it is common because as a kids dentist, I do see a lot of medical histories listed with kids having heart murmurs. I am glad you are doing what is good for your kids and being proactive. THat is so important!

I had a benign murmur as a teenager but one of my very good friends was born with a serious hole in his heart and he has had multiple open heart surgeries to do repairs... they found his defect in utero though

I didn't realize heart murmurs were that common! I'm sure everything is fine with your little guy, but I'll be praying for you just the same. I hope you all get healthy & stay healthy!

Two of our kids did and one was sent to a Pediatric Cardiologist to have it checked out. It was terrifying but she was fine! Good luck!

I have to have my dogs checked regularly for Mitral Valve Disease. It is very prominent in their breed. Indiana was clear the last time she was checked at 4 years old and Davinia had a slight murmur (Grade1)just something to follow up on as she gets older but certainly not an issue. I was told to keep her at a healthy weight and make sure she goes on walks regularly.

Hope whatever is going on with your baby is not serious.

Wow, crazy...no one in my family has a heart murmur that we know of but I sure know what it's like to have a sick child and the possibility of something major. Hope everything comes out ok for you all!

I hope it all works out. Just wait and see what they say and then go from there. No need in getting excited. I know I was told when I was younger I had one and then it was gone later. They the doctors always tell you the worst before they know anything Take care it is hard enough when they are sick. Hugs, Rita Spratlen rjspratlen@gmail.com
