Rethink What You Drink

I just had to share this picture that was shared with me on Facebook today. I have been staring at it in shame all day long. I like to think that I am a pretty smart Mom. I do my best to give my kids things that are healthy and good for them but this has REALLY come as a shock to me. I had no idea that those little juice boxes contained THAT much sugar. I just want to crawl in a hole and hide right now. I buy them on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, just today I bought several packs of them while doing my weekly grocery shopping. I mean, I know they aren't the healthiest choice but I NEVER would have guessed that even MILK has that much sugar. Oy oy oy. 

What do you give your kids to drink?!?!?! Did you realize that there is THIS much sugar in these popular drinks?!


  1. One of my friends posted this too. And I've only got two issues with this: 1. They're only showing some of the worst culprits except for the water. I would have liked to see some of the things that aren't quite so obviously sugar-filled. 2. The picture alone doesn't specify if they're measuring naturally occurring sugars (like those found in raw fruits and milk), or if they're only measuring added/processed sugars. Granted, this is chocolate milk that they're showing, so it's sort of like they added candy to milk and you'd expect sugar, BUT milk is inherently sugary on it's own (not necessarily in an unhealthy way--human breast milk actually has higher amounts of certain sugar contents than cows milk and if I remember correctly, it contains a few extra types of sugars that cows milk does not, but the sugars in those milks are necessary for growth and development), so are they blanketly measuring all the sugar? Or just the stuff that's been fiddled with and added in?

    Otherwise, I think this is great! A lot of people know soda's not good for you, but don't realize just how MUCH sugar's in there! And juice is a huge culprit for making people think it's healthy (it's fruit, right?) when it's normally loaded with sugar and contains minimal fruit. Yay for eye-openers! :-)

  2. I just feel like this type of stuff is so damaging to moms and meant to incite people. Everything in moderation is my motto. What do they want us to do, cut out even natural sugar? It's like the big debate between cane and corn sugar?! Theres always something right?

  3. We drink mineral water, called soda water at our house. The occasional juice is halved with mineral water, we also drink fresh herbal teas :)

  4. tap water. actually we use brita but I'm a tight shopper so I don't like to waste money on juice drinks..they drink them all in a matter of 2 days and it's not worth it. the survive just fine on water.

  5. Commercial drinks are disgusting!
