Are Guns The Problem???

As I sit here reading the list of names that was released from the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy, I am perplexed. I just can't stop shaking my head trying to grasp even a tiny bit of understanding as to what could have happened to have made such a horrible event occur. I constantly hear the details airing across the news channels and I read about it in nearly every printed newspaper that I see, and I keep hearing the same thing, over and over and over again. It's the guns and lack of gun control. Take away the guns and things like this just won't happen anymore. And as I hear this repeated over and over again, I shake my head and wonder, was it the guns? Or was it because of the severe moral decay in our society that is spreading like a cancer? Maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with the fact that we have taken God out of nearly every aspect of our lives as to not offend anyone and we have taught our children that we should only call on him in times of tragedy. Could it also be the sense of entitlement that we have created among our younger generations? Have we coddled and spoiled our children so much that they will stop at nothing when things don't go their way?  Maybe it's because we have disintegrated the family unit so much that we don't even know what the definition of the word "family" is today. Over half of our kids are being raised in broken homes and we glorify teenage pregnancy by giving pregnant teens television contracts. Maybe it's because parents today think it's more important to be their child's friend than their mom or dad. Or maybe it's the parents fear that if they do try to correct their child for doing wrong, they might get into trouble. It could be that we allow the television to raise our children or that we allow them to sit hours in front of violent video games where the goal is to see how many people you can kill.

Or maybe it is the guns.

All I know that as a mother of 4 young children, I am broken-hearted. I am sad. I am grasping to restore my faith and hope in humanity.  And I will never, ever forget the faces of each and every victim from Sandy Hook. I pray for those families and that community daily and I hope you all are doing the same.
I saw the tribute that was made by the judges and singers on the Voice today and it was probably the best tribute I have seen to the victims so far. To watch the video, click here.

  1. I appreciate your thoughtful and though provoking addressing of this tragedy. I think you're spot-on with your detailed first paragraph.

Banning guns will only disarm the good guys while keeping the bad guys armed. At some point we, as a society, need to begin to address the pertinent issues you've raised. That will be much harder than outlawing guns.

  2. I don't think banning guns would take away the problem. Someone could go in with a knife and stab people as well. To me it has more to do with mental illnesses not being treated. In this case the young man that looked like a child to me was exposed to guns when he was an unstable person. The mixture of a weapon and a mental illness isn't good. Sadly mental illness isn't covered by health insurance here.

I'd love to say that mental illness doesn't exist. I've seen first hand issues with it. My husband worked with a lady that went off her meds. She went from being odd to really crazy. She was asking everyone she worked with for a sample of their blood, so she could test it. My husband wouldn't give a sample and she freaked out. A week later she was taken away.

  3. Banning guns would be about the same as putting a bandaid on a severed artery. Guns are no more to blame in this tragedy than the car that a drunk driver was behind the wheel of in an accident. They are all just tools. The real issue is the heart of man - all of those things you described. Where there is a will to do evil, there will always be a way no matter how much legislating we try to do to stop it. Until we deal with the root of the problem it isn't going to change.
