How to Plant an Herb Garden...from Hearst Magazines!

Funny how I get so many random emails throughout the day and then suddenly one will catch my eye  that I seriously need to see! I am clueless when it comes to gardening but the kids are always bothering me to plant an herb garden, which I think is a cool idea, I just have no clue what I am doing. The email I received today was from Hearst Magazines and it contained a sneak peak into the special edition that hits newsstands on March 6, 2012!  Be sure to check this out!!!!

One of the first things it had was instructions for an easy to plant herb garden. SCORE!

The 1-Hour Herb Garden
These aromatic plants are perfect for growing in containers, making this project ideal for apartment-dwellers and experienced gardeners alike. Keep them near the kitchen door, and you’ll have a steady supply all summer long.
Step 1: Cover the pot’s drainage hole with a terracotta shard or a coffee filter. No drainage hole? Drill one in the bottom of the pot. (For smaller pots, the hole should be a half inch in diameter; for larger pots, 1 inch.) Fill the container about two-thirds full with your potting mix.
Step 2: Map the layout of your herbs by arranging the still-potted plants in the container. First place trailing herbs (which will grow over the pot’s side), such as thyme, oregano, and chives, around the edge. Medium-height herbs such as tarragon, sage, and marjoram fill in the next section. The tallest herbs (lavender, fennel, rosemary) go in the center. Lave 3 to 4 inches between plants. Five to eight herbs will fit in a larger pot; three to five in a smaller one.
Step 3: Remove herbs from their original pots and place them in the soil. If the roots are tightly bound, use your hands or a fork to gently loosen them so they can spread out and make themselves at home in the new soil.
Step 4: Use a spoon or your hands to fill in the soil around the seedlings, leaving 2 inches to the top of your container so there’s enough room to water. Herbs shouldn’t be planted too far beneath the surface—where the soil gets compacted—or their roots will suffocate.
Step 5: Pack the soil very firmly around the plants. You want your herbs to feel secure, so the tighter you pack in the soil around them, the better.
Step 6: Water immediately. Herbs do best outside (and love full sun), so don’t start your garden until the daytime temperature is consistently 65ºF

To see more easy gardening tips, be sure to pick up a copy of this special edition when it hits the stands next week!!

VueZone

I am going to admit....I am slightly insanely overprotective when it comes to my children playing outside. I wasn't like this when we lived in town and we knew all of our neighbors but since we have moved to the country, on a very busy highway I might add, I watch my children like a hawk!!!  We have a huge backyard that the kids love to play in but I don't like for them to play where I can't see them. It's frustrating for them sometimes because I can't always go outside when they want to so I will tell them they have to stay in the part of the yard where I can see them out the window and they hate that because all of their fun stuff to do is out in the back where I can't see if I am inside.  The weather is getting nicer by the minute and my oldest is getting ready to start playing Spring soccer which means they are going to be spending a LOT more time outside in the weeks to come and I need a solution on how I can go along with my business inside the house while my children are outside playing. Introducing VueZone.....an easy to use personal video camera system.  I attended a webinar on the VueZone today and I was so impressed with the amazing features it offers! Whether my kids are outside playing or upstairs in another part of the house, VueZone offers the peace of mind that I need to get through my day!  I would be super comfortable saying that VueZone is a must-have for busy Mom's. We stretch ourselves so thin as it is and we obviously cannot be everywhere at one time and THAT is why I love VueZone! I want to say thank you to Heather who conducted the webinar because I learned SO much!!! She is Mom of 2 boys so I know she can relate to all of us!

Can you imagine being away from home and actually being able to see your child with his/her babysitter? How about if your kids are supposed to be upstairs doing homework? Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to see if that is what they are REALLY doing?! You can even keep your eye on your pets while you are away from the house! Whatever need you have, the VueZone can support you!!!

Special Features

*Wireless video system equips parents with the capability to place cameras virtually anywhere inside the home

* Setup in less than 15 minutes

*Live streaming video can be accessed via an app on your smartphone

*Motion detection captures footage and sends a link via email

Where has THIS been all of my life?! All you have to do is place the completely wire free cameras around your home and view them remotely! Because they are wireless you can move them virtually anywhere.....watching over your napping baby or the front porch while you are away on vacation! The VueZone cameras transmit wireless video to a VueZone gateway connected to your Internet Router....you don't even have to mess with maintaining software on your PC, making the VueZone completely hassle free.

There are so many awesome things you can do with the VueZone!  For instance, if you want to take a closer look at something in your camera view, you can select an area and zoom in for a more detailed look! This would be so perfect for us. I can't tell you how many times I have seen my kids doing something outside from the window and wondered, "What on earth are they doing?!" Problem solved.

You can even take a video or picture anytime and store it online!  VueZone lets you schedule a one-time or recurring recordings! Click HERE to see all of the devices that VueZone has to offer!!!

Service Plans

VueZone offers 3 separate service plans, tailored to fit every budget. The basic is FREE and supports up to 2 cameras and viewing on a computer.  This is automatically included with every system. If you want more options, you can go with the Premier or Elite plan.  The Premier is just $36.95/year for a limited time OR $4.95 a month and supports up to 5 cameras.  This also includes the option for viewing on both the computer and your smartphone.  This plan also includes active alerts and recordings with 250 MB of space.  The Elite plan is $79.95 for a limited time and this is for small businesses or users who have a high demand. This would be perfect for a larger daycare or even if you own a store!  You can use up to 15 cameras and your storage space is doubled!

To learn more, visit their website at VueZone.com
You can also connect with them via the VueZone Facebook page OR follow @VueZone on Twitter! Also, this Thursday they will be launching a new March Madness contest!!!! Don't miss out on that! You could win an iPad and a VueZone system!!!

St. Patrick's Day Rainbow Cupcakes

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner and I have been trying to find some new treats to whip up for the kids this year. If you are looking for some St. Patrick's Day recipes for kids, look no further! We like to celebrate every holiday by doing something fun and letting the kids help out with a fun treat is definitely something we like to do!  Last year we tried a fun recipe for Rainbow Cupcakes so we thought we would make them again this year AND share the recipe so you can make them too!! We originally got this recipe from Family Fun Magazine so we definitely want to give them a shout-out for the awesome idea! The picture below is their pic of what they COULD look like, although ours look just slightly different since we let the kids do most of the work.  LOL

Rainbow Cupcakes

Ingredients:
1 Box of White Cake Mix
Food Coloring (red, blue, green and yellow)
Baking Cups

Directions:

Step 1.) Prepare your favorite white cake mix and then divide evenly into 6 bowls.

Step 2.) Using food coloring, make each bowl into one of the colors of the rainbow. If you aren't sure how to do so, I have included a little guidance below on how to get each color!

Purple: 9 drops of red, 6 drops of blue
Blue: 12 drops of blue
Green: 12 drops of green
Yellow: 12 drops of yellow
Orange: 12 drops of yellow, 4 drops of red
Red: 18 drops of red

Step 3: Line muffin pan with baking cups. Evenly distribute the batter into the cups using the order shown above. As you pour each color of batter into the cups, spread each layer of batter with the back of a spoon to cover the color underneath. Remember, if you add too much of one color, all of the colors of batter might not fit into the cup.

Step 4: Bake cupcakes according to package directions. When finished, allow to completely cool and top with an icing or whipped cream "cloud." Arrange these into a rainbow shape when you present them for an extra touch!

(You can see below that my lovely children made the clouds. hehe)

You can also see by our picture below how awesome these look when you cut them in half!!!  These are a HUGE hit with the kids!!! Since our kids helped, these aren't PERFECT rainbows but they are still super cool!

LocalGivingTree.Com

I absolutely LOVE the internet for a variety of reasons but mostly because of the deals I can find. There are some really great national deal sites out there but I really love companies that give back and that is why I am so excited to introduce you to LocalGivingTree.Com!  LocalGivingTree.com is a national deal site that offers handmade, artisan, eco-friendly boutique items but that's not even what makes it so awesome. With every sale, a portion of the proceeds is donated to a nonprofit organization or school chosen by the artist or business who is making the offer.  Local Giving Tree is committed to planting roots that are helping our local communities and to me, THAT is really something special!

About Local Giving Tree's Founder, Amber DeBirk

Amber DeBirk is a wife, mother, artist, teacher, fundraiser and community activist. She is married to her best friend, Bill, and a mother to two sweet girls, Indy Rose (6) and Willa Grace (4), plus their retriever, Murphy(13)!!!  She is very involved in her community and the arts and she has written grants and fundraised for numerous local and national nonprofits and even started her town's first community market that sells locally grown produce, arts and crafts. Known as a "sustainable" artist, she works mainly with fused glass made out of old windows and bottles, as well as mixed-media using scrap materials.  She also teaches fused glass art classes through her local University.  How cool is that?! After being approached by numerous daily deal sites wanting her to offer her fused glass creations and classes on their websites, she realized that something was missing with these deal sites. Being someone who donates proceeds from her work to non-profits, she consulted with friends and Localgivingtree.com was born!

So right now, Local Giving Tree is offering a HUGE giveaway and special offer which I think you are going to love!  Just for signing up to receive their emails, they are offering a FREE handmade fused glass pendant made out of scrap glass by Amber!  Check them out below, they are absolutely beautiful!!!

ATV Safety Tips for Beginners

Spring is right around the corner (did Winter ever really arrive?) which means people all over will be bringing out their outdoor toys, including ATV's.  We personally have several here at our own home that we enjoy riding but safety is a HUGE concern for us!  It wasn't very long ago when a teenage girl here in our town was killed while riding on the back of an ATV and that always comes to mind when we get them out for our family to enjoy. Riding ATV's comes with certain responsibilities and we all must be very diligent in making sure everyone who rides them is properly trained and always puts safety first.

First of all, we always make sure everyone wears a helmet, including the adults because we lead by example. Our older 2 children are allowed to ride our small ATV alone but our 6 year old is only allowed to ride with an adult.  None of the kids are allowed to drive our big 4-Wheeler alone. We also have a clear course in our back yard that the kids are allowed to ride on and they are not allowed to go anywhere outside of that trail we have created. Our other big rule is that they are only allowed to ride when an adult is outside, they are NEVER allowed to ride when they are outside alone. Certain states also offer ATV safety courses for people to utilize. Different states have different regulations involving ATV's so it's best to check and make sure your state doesn't require you to have any type of special license or certification before you purchase and ride an ATV.

What about you? Does your family ride ATV's? What are some of your rules?

Zebra Wall Art

Shhhh. It's a secret.

Our princess is turning 9 in a few months and we are working SO hard on giving her a HUGE surprise for her birthday! She loves everything zebra and hot pink and I think since she is getting bigger, it's time for us to give her a bedroom makeover. I have been searching the internet like a madwoman, finding anything and everything I can in this print and I am soooo excited to share this Etsy site with you! I really wanted some letters to spell out Emma's name as a part of her zebra room decor and I found this cool shop called Crafty Shat: Unique Obsessions and they make these personalized letters for just $5 each! These 2 ladies are SUPER nice to work with and have outstanding customer service! I even received an email from them while one of the ladies was in LABOR, ensuring me that my order would be filled promptly after their new, sweet baby was born! Thank you SO much Amber and Shari for your top notch customer service!! You all HAVE to check out their shop and if you are in the market for some super cool, personalized wall art, look no further!!! I have seen these letters go for up to $20/each so you are going to receive an AWESOME value for your money!

Check out the amazing work they did for us! Emma is going to FREAK when she sees her new room in a few months....I just have to keep it all a secret until then!  I have been hiding everything in my husband's closet so hopefully she doesn't find any of it! I will post everything else as we get it so if you are looking for new ideas, you can check out where we are finding everything!!!  To be honest, we have so much stuff coming from different places that I don't even remember anymore what's coming! HAHA!

Fun Kids Recipe! Nutter Butter Acorn Treat!

With 4 kids, we are always looking for fun, new, kid-friendly recipes and boy did we find an easy and yummy one! This one is SO easy that the kids can pretty much do it themselves, with your supervision of course! This is one of the quickest and easiest treats we have made yet and the ingredients go a LONG way! If you need a treat to feed a lot of people, this one is perfect!

Nutter Butter Acorn Treats

Ingredients Needed:

Nutter Butter Bites (The small, round cookies)
Hershey Kisses
Milk Chocolate Chips

Directions:

1.) Unwrap the Hershey Kisses that you are going to use. Arrange all ingredients on the table so you will have them ready to go!

2.) Heat a glass plate in the microwave for 1 minute

3.) Take the plate out and place the Hershey Kisses on the plate. This melts the bottoms just enough to get them to stick to the cookies!

4.) Immediately start placing the Hershey Kisses on one side of the Nutter Butter Cookie Sandwich

5.) Set aside to cool

6.) Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with the Chocolate Chips OR if there is melted chocolate on the plate from the Kisses, you can just dip the chocolate chips in this! It makes a great "glue."

7.) Place the Chocolate Chips on the opposite side of the Nutter Butter Cookie Sandwich

8.) Let cool for about 10 minutes so everything can dry

9.) ENJOY!!!!

Kids and School

We had our first three children within 4 years and I thought our life could not be crazier. I remember thinking, if I could just hang on until they got a little older and started school, things would finally slow down. Boy. Was. I. Wrong. The older they get, the crazier it gets! They start school and have a million activities going on in school, after school sports, friends. Having 3 children in the same elementary school is seriously insane. Their holiday parties are all at the same time on the same days and I have to stretch myself really thin to make sure I am a part of each one of their parties. And after school, my time is spent making sure 3 kids get their homework done on top of caring for a 2 year old, a husband and our household needs. It's insane. Luckily I have 3 very intelligent children who don't need much help from me, I am more like a cheerleader and motivator than anything.

We have ran into a couple instances where our daughter has struggled a little with math so I was super excited to find a page on Dreambox dedicated to 3rd grade math!!!  I also found a ton of resources at the Ohio Resources Center. I will be the first to admit that I hate math. I always struggled with it in school so I don't get bent out of shape when Emma has problems. Although I find it funny that our 4th grader, Drew, is in the gifted math program! How can it be possible that 2 children, only 13 months apart, can be so completely different? The school told me that Drew will go on to be in the gifted math program next year when he moves to the Intermediate Building and I told him he is on his own. LOL I don't even know how I made it through my math classes in college. Seriously.  But they are all great in English and Reading so that is a HUGE plus!

Does your child struggle with any subjects? What do you do to help them?

Baby Shower Ideas

It's been awhile since I planned a baby shower but I know several of our loyal fans and readers are currently expecting so I wanted to share the CUTEST idea with you! So much money is spent on the cake at parties but I came across some cupcakes on the Baby Gaga site that could possibly be the most adorable thing I have ever seen.  The next time I have to plan a baby shower, I am sooooooooo making these. All you need to do is bake the cupcakes, icing them and add something for the eyes and then add the pacifier. If the Mom-to-Be has asked for pacifiers, buy the brand she is asking for and these will double as gifts!  If it's a girl you can use pretty pink and purple binkies and if it's a boy, you can look for blue's and green's!  I read that the best way to get flesh colored icing is to buy a copper food coloring and just add a single drop to the white icing.  You can use chocolate icing for a darker skin color for the babies or if you need a lighter colored brown, you can try this. Mix equal parts of red and green food coloring into the icing. Add a touch of orange and green to the mix and you will achieve a nice tan-like brown. If you add a touch of yellow instead, you can achieve a darker, richer brown.  If the color looks too gray or black, you can add more red or yellow to get the desired results. You just have to play around with it....unless you can find the brown dye and then you are good to go!

How cute are these!? So much cuter than  cake!!!!!!

Styrofoam Wall Art

I like to do crafts but I have to admit...I am REALLY bad at them. If it isn't something really easy, mine usually doesn't turn out good--at all. LOL So you know if I am posting a crafty idea on here, it is something super simple that anybody can do!!!  My Mom called me the other day and scheduled a craft day for us to do this Styrofoam Wall Art project and I thought I should probably share it with all of you! It's super easy and the decor options are endless.

Wall art can be really expensive but it doesn't have to be! Styrofoam is available in all shapes and sizes, enabling you to create a masterpiece on ANY wall. For the project I am getting ready to show you, we used the large pieces of scrapbooking cardstock but you can also use fabric as an alternative!

What you Need:

Styrofoam (We used 10x10 squares)
Large Scrapbooking Cardstock OR Fabric pieces
Spray Adhesive Glue
Craft Glue
Ribbon
Wall Hangers

Instructions:

Step 1. Spray the adhesive glue on one piece of styrofoam then position the fabric or cardstock over the top of it. Trim off the extra edges of cardstock or fabric.

Step 2: Use craft glue to place ribbon around the entire edge of your styrofoam piece. It's easiest if you use a push pin to start and then remove it later on after it is all dry.

Step 3: Place any type of wall hanger on the back of your wall art so you can hang it! We put a little craft glue on the nails before we attached them to help secure it a little better. When you hang these on your wall, you are going to want to use the very small nails. These are so lighweight, I would even guess you could use a strong, double sided tape or just about anything else to secure these to the walls.

All done! Can you believe that?! So easy!!!

My daughter has a pink/black theme in her room so I made wall art to go in her bedroom! I love the way it came out and can't wait to hang them up in her room! They are going to look soooo cute!!

My neice has her room done in pink and brown so my Mom made her some wall art for a birthday gift in coordinating colors!

My sister made her wall art to match her living room decor. She opted not to put hangers on the back and plans to use them as decor in a large bookcase that she has.

So easy and seriously, you can do so much with this project. You can buy different shapes and sizes of the styrofoam and make a whole wall collage and you can seriously do any design imagineable if you use the cardstock! My older 2 boys have a sports themed bedroom so I think I am going to make them some of these next! So excited that such a cute idea can be SO easy! I hope you all decide to try this one out!!!!
