Week 6 of the SHRED Diet PLUS a Yummy Smoothie Recipe!

Hard to believe but we are getting ready to start our final week of the SHRED diet by Dr. Ian! The past several weeks have just went by in a blur and I cannot believe we are already starting the final week. I can't wait to share our final results next week! So far my husband and I are both hanging right around the 20 pound mark. (I have lost 22 myself, WOO HOO!) We haven't made any plans indefinitely going forward although we both have additional weight we would still like to lose. I would like to lose another 35 pounds and Nick still needs to lose about 15. I am thinking we will take a couple of weeks off of SHRED to let our bodies get used to the weight and then we might start a new cycle from there. Week 5 was pretty easy except the lemon water with the Flaxseed oil. It was absolutely disgusting and I could only stomach it for the first couple of days. After that, I am sad to say that I discarded the oil and just stuck with the lemon water. It wasn't so bad when I put it in my smoothies but I just didn't like the idea of it and it made me nauseous.

I have really stepped up the workouts this week. When I get time this weekend, I am going to post a couple of really good  treadmill workouts. If you don't have a treadmill, you can do them just walking outside too. I have learned that interval training is the absolute best way to burn the maximum calories and I found a couple really great workouts that burn a good number of calories in just 20 minutes. I have also been finding extra workouts to be super helpful.  Like, when it's time to get my kids from school, I go 20 minutes early, find a parking spot and then power walk around the school until they get out. I have also been doing small things like parking further away from the door at the store. Even though these are just little things, they make a big difference over the course of a week!

I have had a lot of people ask me about the protein shakes still. I buy mine from the store most of the time. Just about any kind work, just make sure you are looking at the calorie content. I have tried to stay under 200 for most weeks. I have also found that when I am running low on ingredients, the banana smoothie from the SHRED book is a super quick and easy choice. Since it's between 250-300 calories, I make one and then split it with either my husband or my daughter who really likes them for breakfast!

Banana Smoothie

1 whole banana, peeled and sliced
1 cup milk (I use skim)
1/4 cup plain low-fat yogurt (We love the Dannon Light and Fit Vanilla)
1/4 cup ice chips

Just blend together on medium speed until everything is smooth. This is one of the smoothest, creamiest shakes that you can make--my daughter thinks it tastes like a milkshake. YUM!

I am looking forward to Week 6 starting tomorrow. It looks like it is pretty much back to a normal eating plan that I can get used to. YAY! I will have before and after pictures next week upon our completion of the program--stay tuned!

  1. Hi Sarah. Awesome job! I will finish week 4 on Sunday. How much weight did you lose during week 5? I read somewhere that week 5 should be a good weight lose week. I hope so. So far, besides the first week, I'm losing about 2lbs each week. I'll take it!!

  2. I only lost a pound on Week 5 BUT I can tell a huge difference in inches. I would venture to say that I am gaining a lot of muscle now with these workouts and that is probably why I am not losing the pounds as quickly. I know SHRED does not mention anything about weight training or anything--it's cardio only and I am doing a lot more now with weights and stuff to try and tone up as I go.

  6. I am so sorry to read you dont get the benefits of FLAXSEED OIL ,Its - 2 teaspoons/Not 2 Tablespooons,Im surc you can put @ teaspoons in a smotthie... WHY FLAXSEED OIL??? Adding small doses to your diet has its health benefits. Flaxseed Oil
According to ongoing research, flaxseed may aid in preventing hormone-related cancers (breast, prostate, colon) and heart disease, improving blood sugar levels, decreasing the number of hot flashes associated with menopause and even warding off arthritis and asthma when used as an anti-inflammatory. More scientific evidence is needed in order to say for certain whether or not flaxseed works in these ways, but taken in small doses, it can't hurt to add it to your heart healthy diet. Another tip: Taking flaxseed in capsule form or adding it to your daily menu can also lead to healthier hair and skin.

  7. GREAT INFO ON FLAXSEEDS !http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/meal-ideas/10-tasty-ways-eat-flaxseeds
Use Flaxseeds in Food You Already Eat
"Flaxseeds are tiny but powerful. Don't underestimate these little guys," says Alyssa Phillips, a physician's assistant with a degree in nutrition. "They have one of the biggest 'bang for your buck' around with their abundantly high fiber (helps with weight loss and intestinal health), phytochemicals/antioxidants (including ligans, which help to balance female hormones and can possibly prevent breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes), and Omega-3 fatty acids (fights inflammation) content!"
Use ground flaxseeds in baked goods -- pancakes, muffins, cookies! But don't heat flax oil.
To make it a part of your diet, he suggests adding it to stuff you already eat. For instance, you can try mixing it into your meatloaf, meatball, and casserole recipes, he says.

  11. hi just found this site and am very excited. any tips for dinner out? i have a dinner with a few girls at an Italian resturant and don't want to stray from the diet or make a big deal at the resturant about what to eat. it is tomorrow day 1 of the secound week any ideas anyone?? thanks

  12. You get a salad, meat and a veggie for your meal so I would maybe just sub the meat for a light pasta. Just watch the portion. Italian places usually give you 4 times the normal serving. I would also skip the bread!

  13. Thank you sarah appreciate the reply and Idea didn't know you could do a light pasta instead of a meat. thanks :)

  14. Your post was encouraging to read. I am in week 4 but have failed miserably since week 3 day 3. I was starving and couldn't handle all the smoothies. I would get half way through the day and really feel the "pain". It's also hard when you are feeding your family dinner and you are having another smoothie. I'm thinking of starting over with week 1 tomorrow. I lost 5 pounds the first two weeks and gained 2 pounds week 3. Any tips on getting through all the smoothies?? OR any good snacks that helped keep you full?

  15. Barleans makes flavored Flaxseed oils. You can drink them straight off the spoon, they are that good. Put them in smoothies too.

  16. Hi there, I am about to start week 5.. I have a few questions. When it says "hamburger/cheeseburger, or veggie burger" did you do a traditional burger w/ a bun, or did you just eat the meat.. the yummier side of me says "old fashioned burger" the healthier side of me says " meat only." What did you do to see results?
