Diabetes is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. My Dad was only in his 30's when he was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and my brother in law was diagnosed with Type I Juvenile Diabetes before the age of 10. Both my Dad and brother in law love sweets but we all know that sugar and diabetes just don't mix. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for my mother in law when her youngest son was first diagnosed. Being an adult and knowing you shouldn't eat sugary treats is one thing but having to tell your child that he can't enjoy some of those treats that kids love to have would be heartbreaking. I met my husband when my brother in law was around 10 years old and I remember thinking how sad it made me when kids would bring in treats at school and he couldn't have them or watching how sick he would get when he did indulge.
My Dad has bought sugar free candy for as long as I can remember and I can recall snatching pieces of it when I was a kid still living at home and I can still remember how bad some of it tasted and I wondered how he could eat that stuff. I guess you just get used to it after awhile but I can honestly say there aren't many sugar free candies that I can say I actually like to eat. I was recently introduced to Werther's Original Sugar Free candy and this has completely changed my mind regarding sugar free candy! When a package from Werther's Original showed up on our doorstep, I couldn't wait to share them with my Dad!
My Dad was really excited about the package from Werther's Original! Our entire family is huge fans of the brand and to find that they have a sugar-free line was really great. The package included a candy dish along with four varieties of the candy. This included Caramel, Caramel Apple, Caramel Coffee and Caramel Cinnamon. I could not believe how yummy these candies are! Our favorites were definitely the original and the Caramel Apple but they were all delicious. A lot of sugar free candy leaves a bad taste in your mouth but I am happy to report that the only taste left in your mouth after eating a sugar free candy from Werther's Original is rich caramel! Knowing that there is 0% sugar in the candy just makes me feel good knowing my Dad can indulge in one of his favorite treats without hurting his body. Each piece of candy is made with the sugar alternative Isomalt and the sweetener Acesulfame-K and carries only 3g of carbs and 8 calories. This is HUGE because if you look at a lot of sugar free candies, the calorie content is insane.
Changing your diet when you become diabetic is a very difficult thing, even more difficult when you love sweets. Knowing that there are options out there available for diabetics to enjoy is a big deal. I am so happy I got to share these products with my Dad and can't wait to share them with my brother in law when we see him again!
