I'm not a chef. I'm not even an excellent cook. I do enjoy preparing meals for my family, however, but with four busy children, it's hard to make every meal totally from scratch. I often rely on canned foods to help me cook because I can come up with a great meal for my hungry family with the use of cans. Cooking with cans is a great alternative when you are short on time, fresh foods are not available or you just want something different. The canning process locks in foods' freshness, flavor and nutrients at the peak of ripeness, just hours after picking. Living in Ohio, we go through periods where certain foods aren't in season so I rely on canned goods to get us through these times when fresh is not available.
According to a University of California Davis study, many canned fruits and vegetables have the same nutrients as their fresh or frozen counterparts. A well-stocked "cantry" helps you save time and get a healthy, flavorful, home-cooked meal on the table more often. 73% of Americans throw away spoiled fruits and vegetables on average two times a week. I can attest to this. Just yesterday, I had to throw away rotten bananas that had been forgotten about and just a few days ago, I had to throw out peaches that had gone bad before we had the chance to eat them.
One of my kids favorite meals is Chicken and Noodles and I can put this dish on the table in a matter of just 10 minutes thanks to canned products like Hormel Chicken Breast! I simply put a pot of water on to boil, cook my noodles and dump in a can of Hormel chicken and we have a hot, delicious meal that the entire family will love!
