Personal Genetic Testing with 23andMe #23andMeGenetics

Thank you 23andMe for sponsoring this post. For more information about this leading health and ancestry DNA service, please visit 23andMe.

Genetic testing is super important to me because I think it's vital that we know where we came from. My Dad was abandoned by his father at a young age so we have never known much about his side of the family, including important health information. I often have wondered about illnesses and genetic health conditions that might come from his side of the family that we don't know about. Thankfully, that all can change thanks to the innovative technology from 23andMe.

23andMe is a DNA analysis company that offers affordable genetic testing and analysis to help people become informed about their genetic makeup. Once their lab receives your sample, DNA is extracted from cells preserved in your saliva. They then amplify the DNA, growing the tiny amount extracted from your saliva until there's enough to be genotyped. The research team at 23andMe has hand picked tens of thousands of additional genetic variants linked to various conditions and traits in the scientific literature to analyze on their genotyping chip. As a result, they can provide you with personal genetic information available only through 23andMe.

Using the kit is simple and painless. For $99, you will receive a kit in the mail that collects your saliva. Once the sample is collected, you simply send it back and wait. After your DNA samples are completed, you will receive a full report. There is a growing list of over 240 traits and diseases that you could find information on just from your DNA. You can find that list here.

I just keep thinking  how wonderful this breakthrough technology is and how useful it could be to people. I am sure there are health conditions in my family that I don't know about that could probably benefit me in the future. My grandmother had a blood clotting disorder that nobody can seem to find the name of and I would love to find more about my DNA since we don't know too much about my Dad's father. If you have questions about your genetic makeup and often wonder about your bloodline, I would definitely recommend you check out 23andMe!!!
