When we purchased our new home back in the fall, the first thing we noticed when we looked at it was that it had beautiful wood floors but they were in desperate need of restoration. They had not been cared for very well and were covered in scratches and they had lost their appeal. We made the decision to hire a company to come in and completely refinish the floors prior to moving in and we could not have been more thrilled with the results. They came in with a huge sander and after they completed the sanding, they applied all new stain and finish and what we were left with was beautiful wood floors that looked brand new again. With four children running in and out on a daily basis, we know that we have to take extra care with our hard wood floors to keep them looking the way they do today so with the help of Litchtfield Floor Renovations, we were able to come up with a great list of tips to help keep wood floors looking nice and new.
*Keep floors clean of dirt and debris. Even a small piece of dirt left behind can cause damage to your floors. Preferably, use a vacuum with a hard floor attachment so that loose dirt can be cleaned up from between the boards
*Use only products that were designed specifically for wood floors when cleaning
*Don't drag furniture over the floors when moving it around. Instead, you can purchase felt pieces that can go under the legs of furniture to help it glide smoothly across the floors without causing damage
*Take care when choosing your window treatments. Products like blinds will help prevent discoloration of your flooring
*Be careful what kind of shoes you allow on your hard wood floors. Avoid heels or just avoid shoes on your floors altogether
*Keep your pets nails trimmed
*Use area rugs and mats in high traffic areas of the home but move them ever so often to prevent these areas from becoming a different color than the rest of the floor. Avoid rubber and vinyl mats as these allow water to be trapped underneath them
*Clean up spills immediately with a dry cloth
Following these tips, you should be able to keep your wood floors looking as beautiful as ever for a long time to come. If you have wood floors that have seen better days, I would definitely recommend having them refinished. You will be amazed at the difference, just make sure you find a reputable company with references before you hire someone for the job.
