Spruce up Room Decor with Accent Chairs

Furniture can be expensive so when you start getting bored with a room, new furniture is not usually an option. When I start getting tired of a room, I will usually change the paint color or swap out some of the decor. Another way to change things up a bit though is with the help of decorative chairs. We have at least one chair in every room of our home except the bathrooms and we would have one in those rooms as well if they were large enough. Chairs are such a great way to add to a room without spending an arm and a leg.

1. If your furniture is plain without much personality, choose accent chairs with fun colors and/or patterns. I like to use accent chairs to add a pop of color to a room or to pull colors out of our other furniture. In our living room, we have a light green colored couch and love-seat so we have similar accent chairs with some other fun added colors and patterns.

2. Choose which style of chair you need for your room. Keep in mind that if you have modern decor, you are going to want to get more contemporary chairs. Forget the hand me down recliner from grandma's house. It will stick out like a sore thumb. If you have more traditional furniture, you can't go wrong with a comfy recliner!

3. Choose an appropriate fabric. We have 5 kids and 2 dogs inside our house so something that requires a lot of upkeep isn't for us. We choose simple fabrics that can be cleaned quickly and easily. My carpet shampooer is my best friend so when I choose chairs, I have to find material that I can clean with my handheld furniture attachment.

4. Choose something that can actually be used. My biggest pet peeve is going to someone's home where they have furniture that is not intended for people to sit on. In my home, everything is fair game so I try to find furniture that is actually comfortable so that if someone wants to sit in it, they can! We spend the majority of our time in our family room so comfortable living room chairs are a must! My husband prefers a nice recliner while I love my rocking chair. Every chair in our home is functional though and that is the important thing.

Whatever you are trying to accomplish, just be sure that you are creating a space that you can live in. When I am in the market for accent chairs, I take my time and make sure I consider all of the things above so that I can live with my purchase for a long time.
